Traveling to our start point

Vietnam & Singapore, 2016 · May 29, 2016

We have completed nearly 1000 miles of our approximately 19,000 mile journey which so far has taken us through three states, and will bring us through three additional countries. As I am sitting in the SeaTac airport, waiting for our flight to Taipei, it is becoming clear that we have a long way to go.

After starting our travels early (6:30am - so not too bad) in Marin we had a quick and uneventful drive to Portland. We arrived in Portland mid afternoon and met up with my girlfriend Coral. That evening we drove out to Mt. Hood to take in the scenery and nice weather Oregon was experiencing (as opposed to its usual rain). We found a small road that led to a view of Mt. Hood peeking up above a valley, which was more or less as picture perfect as it could get. We stayed there as the sun set and the stars started to come out, which gave us some great photos and time-lapses.

The next morning we explored Portland before saying goodbye to Oregon and continuing on our adventure. Finishing at my family’s farm just outside Gig Harbor, Washington we were able to go on a quick walk to stretch our legs before double checking our packing, and then taking a bus to SeaTac. After a long two days of travel our trip finally feels like it is starting.

We are flying out of SeaTac as opposed to SFO for a few reasons. Firstly, when I finish this trip I will be able to easily get to our farm on the Puget Sound. Driving the 13 hours up here from the Bay Area after returning from Asia didn’t seem super appealing, so starting with the long drive seemed to be the logical thing to do. Secondly, our flights were really cheap from here. We are flying EVA Air, which neither of us have flown before, so hopefully these cheap flights don’t leave us totally miserable. You can expect an EVA Air review tomorrow after our first leg of the journey is complete.

Traveling to the starting point has been long and somewhat tiring, but we have 20 hours of flying ahead of us to rest, watch some movies, and work out the logistics of this blog. I think that we will try and have our daily posts uploaded by a certain time on a consistent schedule, so we will decide on that schedule soon. We are going nearly halfway around the world, so if we upload each post in the evening they will arrive on the West coast in the morning, which seems like a good way to do it. We are extremely excited for this trip. The adventure is truly beginning!

Next stop: Taipei!
